Adult Upgrading

General Information & Cost

An adult learner is a student that is 20 years, or older, on September 1 st of the current school year.

Unfortunately, starting September1, 2021, Sylvan Lake Career High School can no longer offer to accommodate adult students. We gladly refer any adults in need of upgrading to Gasoline Alley Career High School. Their contact information can be found by clicking this link:

As Adult Learners are no longer funded by Alberta Education the cost of per course is $120 per credit.
A 5-credit core subject would cost $600.00. Adult fees are non-refundable. The annual school fee of $100.00 also applies.

The province of Alberta has a funding program in place to help with the cost of upgrading. See our link to Alberta Works for more information and application forms.

High School Equivalency

Anyone who wishes to obtain a High School Equivalency Diploma should be...

  • 18 years or older as of September 1 of the current school year
  • deficient in the credits needed for an Alberta High School Diploma
  • out of school for at  least 10 consecutive months

Gather 100 school credits through a combination of High School credits, credits for maturity and life experiences, and credits for adult education.

A minimum of 60 credits must be gained through classroom instruction in a school or other institution accredited by or acceptable to Alberta Education (for out-of-province students), offering approved senior high school courses.

The Accumulated Credit Checklist through MyPass is an easy way to determine how many credits a student has and how many they still need for a High School Equivalency Diploma. Have a look in the credits section to learn more.

We refer to Gasoline Alley Career High School for any courses needed to obtain this type of Diploma.
